Raised in a family of painters amongst the centuries-old classical Ming and Qing dynasty gardens of Suzhou, China, she absorbed an early understanding of form, narrative, and material process that continues to guide her work in new media art. Since relocating to Los Angeles, Jiang has developed a distinctive visual language that draws on both classical Chinese painting principles and the evolving aesthetics of simulation, animation, and interactive media. Her work pursues the exploration of the present – a contemporary, digital Chinese aesthetic – that translates the spiritual vitality of brushwork and ink into computational space. She studies historical manuals of Chinese painting and garden design, reading them as early systems of worldbuilding that anticipate today’s libraries of digital assets. Through 3D scanning, animation, and projection, she reimagines these traditions as living frameworks that link landscape, body, and technology. Jiang’s work is exhibited internationally, with recent shows at Hubei Museum of Art (Wuhan), Guardian Art Center (Beijing), K Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul), and the Jinji Lake Art Museum (Suzhou). She currently teaches visual design as an Adjunct Associate Professor at USC Media Arts + Practice. She has held teaching appointments at UCLA Design Media Arts and Parsons School of Design. Jiang holds a MFA in Design Media Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Jiang’s current project Spider Lily continues this research within an independently produced digital game. The structure of the O-1 visa (the artist visa) application shaped the game’s design. The project opens up conversations about authority and belonging and highlights the emotional weight behind bureaucratic systems. Project DescriptionSpider Lily is a cinematic platformer game that explores emotional attachment through the language of play. Set within a liminal world imagined as a vast hydraulic system for the cleansing of souls, the work reinterprets the “escort” mechanic, a familiar trope in video games, as a study of care and interdependence. The player inhabits the perspective of the Lost Soul, a twelve-year-old girl who awakens on the desolate shores of purgatory with no memory of her past life. She encounters a blind fish whose eyes have been taken by ravens. The girl and the fish form a faithful bond that becomes the emotional and mechanical heart of the game. What begins as a narrative of rescue becomes an allegory of letting go. Spider Lily, the title of the game, is the red flower that grows alongside the land of yellow springs, the Chinese idea of Purgatory called Huang Quan. It guides the spirits of the deceased on the path to rebirth. Drawn from the rich, symbolic imagery of the yellow springs, the purgatory land functions as a vast water system designed to usher each soul on a journey of progressive stages of purification towards their next life. The shore extracts materials, the forest dissolves memories, the desert purifies desire through evaporation, and the temple circulates souls into rebirth. Formally, Spider Lily extends beyond the logic of traditional adventure games. It approaches gameplay as a system of emotional ecology—one in which loss, trust, and transformation become mechanical as well as spiritual processes. The work meditates on how worlds are sustained through acts of care and release, and on how play might offer a passage between the living and the dead. It was my first time not living in a major city, and the experience of being immersed in nature filled me with excitement and inspiration. I want to create something that captures my love for the boundless sunset, the starry night sky, the desert vegetation, and the millions of years old granite. The title “They are in me and I am in them.” is a quote from Friar Bitter-Melon on Painting by Chinese painter Shi h-t'ao (1641-before 1720). He proposed that the substance of hills and streams embodies the inner law of the universe. A good painter has to meet and comprehend the hills and streams in spirit. It carries meanings such as existence, and humanity, as well as a symbol for the connections between individuals. Through different gestures, we can convey rich emotions and meanings. I started the drawing series "Unreachable Destination" after my experience learning rock climbing in Joshua Tree. In this context, the hand serves as a recurring symbol representing the connection between human body and nature. To me, hand symbolizes the process of self-awareness and self-discovery, including emotions like courage, risk, strength, and the uncertainty of the future. For my online exhibition at New Art City, I adapted my wax pastel works into a series of virtual sculptures. These sculptures are placed among a unique 3D landscape where the figure-ground relationship is redefined, and the figure becomes part of the landscape. Borrowing techniques from Chinese rubbing, I created abstract drawings by rubbing wax pastel against a piece of paper on rocks. The drawing process is very much improvisational, influenced by the lighting, temperature and ambient sound at the moment. The word carries a negative connotation, however, it demonstrates a unique set of attributes: rapid ideation, local design and production. Shanzhai's ignorance of copyright law and intellectual property rights challenges corporate monopolies who occupy resources in the global market.
