Project Description:
Shanzhai Remix is a research-based project that explores the extended meaning of shanzhai (山寨), a Chinese word commonly referring to counterfeit consumables. The word carries a negative connotation, however, it demonstrates a unique set of attributes: rapid ideation, local design and production. Shanzhai's ignorance of copyright law and intellectual property rights challenges corporate monopolies who occupy resources in the global market.
Utilizing 3D scanning, animation, various digital fabrication techniques, and projection mapping, this piece explores the idea of shanzhai as a form of open-source consumables.
